Houston Chronicle App Reviews

Worst App Ive Ever Encountered

Ive said it before. Awful. Fire your vendor and get something that works

Sad

Im so disappointed in this app. I used to enjoy reading the paper, but this app makes it a chore. The stories wont load. Half the time I have to shut down and restart my tablet just to get todays paper to come up. I KNOW there has to be a better way. Chronicle, Id hire new IT people, you are not getting your moneys worth. Or is that just me?

Horrible

They need to hire a professional app developer. Extremely slow, unstable. One of the worst apps on the market. The previous version was excellent, but this one is really awful. I cant understand why they dont start over with a complete new app.

I dont like this app.

Ive read the Houston Chronicle for 30 years and in todays world, I prefer to read it on my iPad. But this app is so awful that I might cancel my subscription. I did like the old app which was like reading the print newspaper. You can do better than this!

They can do better

Much of the information is old or repetitive. Stories you read in the NEWS section are repeated a few inches now in the business section. They dont clear out information that is no longer relevant. A story about The Woodlands Bar-B-Que festival ran for over a week AFTER the posted event dates had come and gone.

Chronicle doesnt care

This is an awful APP! Apparently the Houston Chronicle doesnt care how bad this new APP is. With nothing but horrible reviews you would think they would address the issues or even acknowledge the problems!

Crashes regularly

Each update seems to create more problems. Very buggy - will freeze regularly

Hoping for Better

UPDATE -- I wrote a review in late July (1 star), and it is worse now ((October). App is frozen, and of little use. I ache for all the staffers who work to produce the information, and who are now thrown under the blundering bus of this app. So sad. JULY -- I resort to this app when traveling, and its a good thing I dont leave Houston more often if Im left to this for news from the Chronicle. As a print subscriber, I expect to be able to, well, read the newspaper -- and this app is merely a tantalizing tease. Clumsy, incomplete and frustrating. And, apparently, the Chronicle seems to be OK with this, judging by the lack of changes. I expect better for Houston.

Slight improvement .

The prior app version was the worst I had ever used; I deleted that version. When I heard it had been fixed, I reloaded the app. This upgrade is only a half-step improvement. It only crashes/freezes three times a day. Ridiculous that the Hearst resources and legacy do not advance with modernity.

Horrible

Worst app, plus deceptive ... advertised to be unlimited digital access and content but thats only on via the app which is horrible. Despite calling and emailing they Will not give you your subscription number to be able to set up an ID and view digital content on a web browser ... so much for unlimited

Format and repetition

As I mentioned before I still do not like the format. I liked it better when the app looked more like a newspaper and not the usual news app you get from others. And, the repetition of the articles are getting old. Im seeing the same articles day after day. And whats even worse are the articles that are repeated the same day in different areas and sections. You can do better. You have done better....

Amazingly Bad

Poorly designed and layout with very little "new" news. Articles repeat, especially on the weekend. This past weekend had the same articles from Friday. At least the paper copy actually reports the news! Lost the feature to down load and read later off line. I am moving on to a quality online newspaper (NYT)

Poor performance

The Houston Chronicle app is slow and unreliable. It crashes at least once while reading the paper. Quite often it crashes more than once. When it restarts it asks whether you want to send a report and I say yes all the time. Not sure that the developers do anything to fix the problems. The app is also very slow when you go from one article to the next one or even to the next page of the same article. I also read other magazines and papers on my iPad like Business Week, Time, Fortune, USAToday. They are all significantly better meaning faster and crash resistant. I dont understand why the Chronicle has all these problems and why they cannot learn from other apps. I am almost ready to cancel my subscription because the app performance is so poor.

Terrible

Agree with other reviews. Very slow to load, thinking about cancelling as well.

Ms

Well, your old app that allowed one to see the previous days papers was buggy but this one is not much better. It hangs all the time. I read the obits and often have to go the your web site www.chron to read them since they do not always show up for the day.

Broken

I installed this app on my iPhone after visiting Houston and found that the app continually asks for a subscription and wouldnt let me see any news. It also indicates that I have downloaded the iPad app. As indicated above - Im on an iPhone. Why would you allow me to download an iPad specific app onto my iPhone?

Almost unusable

Frequently crashes, takes forever to load, poor support.

New app horrible

The new app. is terrible for daily reader use. Hard to find columnist, ex. Leonard Pitts, Escape, Choosing a star to post was required but really would not have given it one. Is it possible to go back to previous format?

Standard features?

Sometimes you will find the same articles as the paper newspaper and sometimes you wont. Some standard columns will be found in the app version of the paper and sometimes they wont. Some features such as letters to the editors will be found in one part of the paper one day and somewhere else another day. This makes it difficult to read the paper on the app. One good review it isnt crashing as much.

Cant tell what is in todays paper versus prior papers

Poorly organized.
