Houston Chronicle App Reviews

HOG

This App is a space hog. Almost 3 gigs on the iPad when the NYT is less than 700megs.

Chron App

Unreliable. Slow to navigate from Front Page to your favorite sections. Frequent crashes. Aggravating! Needs lots of work!

Worst app ever

If I could rate it zero stars I would. You cant tell if youre reading current content or something from last week, last month or even last year. If the goal was to push the readers back to the print edition, it worked. Crashes or locks up repeatedly. Takes forever to open a story. I can go on but for what purpose - it will never be improved. Just when you think it cant any worse, it does.

Good source

A good alternative on days when the delivered paper is wet. When out of town, a way to stay connected to home.

Mostly do crossword

I really enjoy the crosswords and do them every day. Sometimes frustrating how slow the app seems to be and the crossword page is error prone. Right now the clues overlap the bar where you navigate you just have to know the arrow is under the clue list. Also sometimes the keyboard wont come up or comes up wrong. So far I can restart it and it will come up second time.

Unreliable

This app freezes or crashes every time it is opened. It is horribly slow. Too many stories are "interactive" forcing users to scroll through slide shows (and ads) to get information.

Totally embarrassing

The old app was fairly good. The new one is so bad that I am considering cancelling the chronicle subscription that I have had for 40 years. It is so bad in so many ways that there is no reason to write more. The first few weeks of this app were unusable (zero stars was accurate), but it has improved to one star with bug fixes to be the most frustrating, slowest to update, most frequent to crash, and the most distant from a smooth operating app on my phone. Really sad as the content is quite good. Why is there no way to share an article? The settings seem to be rich , but how to tell if the app is so slow to update and crashes so often. Geez, is a smooth scroll so hard in 2016?

Solid

I have enjoyed the app and had good interface with reading the daily paper. It is updated frequently and the "off-line" reading is helpful. I have had no issues with the app and it has been reliable.

Horrible, unreliable and poor newspaper

App is bad but add this to the absolutely horrific online format and you truly have a situation where any other option would be welcomed. If there was any competition for houston news Id clearly ditch this crap and go elsewhere. Unfortunately I have no options so I keep paying for this. Once I can find a way not to need the chronicle, Ill be gone in a heartbeat.

Subscribe & Get More Ads Than News!

Subscribed to Chronicle; couldnt read news due to ads slowing the app so much. Like the web based version - unreadable and prone to crashes!

Houston chronicle

This has got to be the worst example of a much needed medium for our news. How can a large corporation such as the Houston Chronicle, deciminating news in the fourth largest city in the country, continue to ignore this problem. They happily open their pockets to take our subscription money then turn around and give us a very inferior product. Shame on you.

Awful

It doesnt work! I cant switch sections ! I cant click on articles. Im done‼️

Useless

App runs slow and articles wont open but continue to run for several minutes. Gave up.

Terrible !!!

Cant use this App....Stories wont load... Pittyful ......Pittyful.... Why am I paying for online reading ? However, I also read the WSJ on-line. Take a que from the WSJ structure !

Just when the old app was stable

They forced an "upgrade" that is unresponsive and full of content days old. How do you turn off old content from loading? I only want todays news - not a whole week of news that I have to sort through every day. Awful. The presentation doesnt even look like a paper. If that is cutting edge, I will take the old app every day. How do we downgrade to the previous version?? Any help with that would be appreciated.

Disgusting

This app is an insult to its subscribers and a disgrace to the publication itself. It is a total mishmash and a prime example of total incompetence on the part of the architects of this abomination. I recognize that the authors of this app are apparently trying to drive people to the printed edition but give me a break- do you have to stoop this low ? By the way, where is the obituary section located? My hope is that I will soon see an obituary for this misguided venture. Brian O

As bad as it gets

I want a newspaper, not Twitter news.

A Real Train Wreck

It really liked the old version. Easy to flip from one section to another... easy to navigate...had a search feature...and I could read TODAYS paper without the distraction of all the repeated articles. Not true of the new version. A real navigation nightmare. Really a shame. Tried it for a few days, but have given up.

Old app was better

Old app was better, easier to navigate and read part of story to see if you wanted to read more. Slow, not user friendly. Liked the old format much better, it gave you the feel of reading a newspaper, not a computer screen. This is a backward move for the Houston Chronicle

disappointing is an understatement

My 85 year-old mother used this to load up stories and read them at the doctor’s office. Now the offline portion is useless. "Will I be able to do offline reading? For offline reading, please enable the preload toggle (Settings > Content > Preload all sections at app launch). With this enabled, the app will preload content in the background. We are aware that this process currently takes a while to complete. Our team is working on improving this function in the upcoming weeks.” Really? I waited, shut off the wifi, and it said “Content Unavailable”. You have no sense of when it’s done downloading the content. Disappointing.
